Who's Johnny? Tonight ShowM introduces new Johnny Carson
Date 3/16/2000 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & CultureThe Tonight Show has now become a tradition at Luther College. March 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL marks the ninth year of this parody of Johnny Carson's late-night talk show, featuring Luther students, faculty, and staff as members of the crew.
Tickets are free with CAF, $5 without.
"It's a variety show that will highlight talent that's not normally highlighted," said Dirk Stadtlander ('00), who plays the role of Ed McMahon, as well as being the co-director of the show.
Starting two weeks after last year's show, this year's crew has been preparing for something new and exciting.
Stadtlander said that the show has struggled in the past with not having enough musical acts, but they plan to have more this year.
This year's show consists of five acts, including Sara Donhowe ('00) in a performance art act; Brent Ryan ('00), Aaron Thiese ('00), and Dan Schumacher ('00) are performing an illusion show; and Mark Willard ('01) will be doing a stand up comedy routine.
The two musical acts are made up of Chris Salter ('02) and company, as well as Herschel Day ('00) and Jason Sinwell ('00). Jazz Band II is also performing, with the Tonight Show appearance doubling as their spring concert.
The show's interviews will feature Jyoti Grewal, professor of history and director of International Studies.
Ross Downing ('99) has been Johnny Carson for seven out of the eight years it has been playing, with Dave Carroll offering the only substitution.
This year's Johnny is "top secret information," according to Stadtlander. "It's going to be great though."
