Freshman year, 1997-98

-The class of 2001 enters Luther, the biggest class Luther had ever seen

-This year marks Weston Noble's 50th year as a choir director at Luther, coinciding with his 75th birthday

-The deaths of Princess Di and Mother Theresa

-Marty's opens

-Indigo Girls and the Blessed Union of Souls perform at Luther

-Jack and Jill closes, building donated to Luther

-"Seinfeld" ends its 9-year run

-"Unabomber" Ted Kaszinski is sentenced to four consecutive life sentences

-Iowa gubernatorial candidate Tom Vilsack visits Luther, he will go on to be elected governor later that year

-Iowans Keny and Bobbi McCaughey give birth to the first-ever surviving set of septuplets

-Mike Tyson bites off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear during a heavywieght title bout

-The Good Friday Peace Accord is signed in Northern Ireland

Sophomore year, 1998-99

-The newly renovated cafeteria opens

-President Clinton is impeached for lying under oath about the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals

-Matthew Shepard is beaten and murdered in Montana because he is a homosexual

-Luther's inter-faith room opens

-"Star Wars: Episode 1" opens

-Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds perform in the CFL. The "Live at Luther" CD is released in the Spring

-President Baker dies of cancer

-Trevin Goin ('99) appears as a contestant on "The Price is Right," takes home both showcase prizes

-The Columbine shooting, the biggest school shooting to date, brings school violence to the forefront

-Ex-WWF wrestler Jesse Ventura is elected governor of Minnesota

-St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGuire and Chicago Cub Sammy Sosa battle to break Roger Maris' season home-run record

Junior year, 1999-2000

-John F. Kennedy Jr. dies when his private plane crashes off of Martha's Vineyard

-Cuban refugee Elian Gonzales becomes the center of an international custody debate

-George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars and Live perform at Luther

-The Multi-cultural Center is vandalized

-The infamous "One-Armed Amish Man," Andy Slabaugh causes questions in Luther's security measures(?)

-Baker Village and Shirley Baker Commons, Luther's complex of townhouses, opens in the Fall. They are named after Luther's former president and his wife.

-The New York Yankees win their first of two consecutive World Series championships

-Controversial pastor Fred Phelps leads a protest of Luther's Nordic Choir concert because of the ELCA's stance on homosexuality. Luther sends a group of students, faculty and administration members to show their support for Luther's choir and the Lutheran church.

Senior year, 2000-01

-George W. Bush wins the closest presidential election in history after an unprecedented legal battle over election standards in Florida

-A fallen U.S. intelligence plane in China becomes Bush's first major foreign relations crises as negotiations to return 24(?) military personnel.

-A series of hate speech and vandalism incidents spark a debate on campus about tolerance and the appropriate response for future incidents

-The Legends Center opens. It includes updated weight and aerobic equipment and a climbing wall

-Phil Assmus ('01) becomes Luther's seventh Rhodes scholar

-Two Luther students and an alumnus, Janet Tisinger ('03), her sister Carol ('00), and Dan Johnson ('03), survive an Amtrak crash outside Des Moines

-The Nobel Peace Prize forum is held at Luther College. The event brought speakers and participants from around the world, including representatives from "Doctors Without Borders," recipients of the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize

-Guster and Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals perform at Luther

-The XFL premieres. The alternate professional football league is a collaboration between NBC and the World Wrestling Federation
