How environmentally friendly is the new Center for the Arts?

Business Brokerage The new Center for the Arts building, which expands across the top of the well-known Sunny Side hill across from the Jenson Music Hall, has been the subject of enthusiasm as well as distress. A majority of the Luther College community would agree that the school needed a new arts facility, but many still find themselves wondering, "Was it necessary to build on one of the last scenic locations on campus?" A love for nature's aesthetic value and a distaste for hierarchical decisions is at the heart of many people's concerns.

In 1998, Christianson presented his first statement against tearing down Sunny Side to Luther's former president, Jeffery Baker. Broker Justin Ticket "There was no chance for discussion," he recalled. Christianson wished a campus-wide discussion had occurred because that would have provided an opportunity for students and faculty, the Decorah community and alumni to voice their concerns about the location of the building.

Real Estate Brokerage A few students were part of the planning committee and did have the opportunity to express their desires and concerns for what the building needed to bring to the college.

Commodity Broker "There was a student presence during the programming stage," recalled Tim Peter, associate professor of music, also a member of the planning committee for the new facility. However, according to Diane Tacke, only one student was part of the building committee and none were involved in the final decision on location.

Brokerage House Aside from the lack of student voice, the building committee did describe the plans to other portions of the Luther community.

Real Estate Broker Exam "The idea was discussed amongst the faculty during division meetings and was described to the administration and support staff," explained Tacke. She later added, "There was an opportunity for comments and feedback." However, simply allowing part of the Luther community with the chance to give feedback does not make for a collective community decision.

Brokerage Services Though many students and faculty still cringe when they see the loss of Sunny Side's sacred grove of trees, hopefully the Center for the Arts building will prove itself to be a worthy investment that meets Luther's academic needs.

Peter is optimistic that "even though the hillside has changed, it will return to a sacred place because of all the art and culture that will become a part of it." Also, the college was able to salvage some material from the Sunny Side building and will make an extra effort to replace most of the vegetation that was lost.

Online Brokerage Firm The new classrooms aren't completed yet, but there is already a valuable lesson to be learned from the Center for the Arts building. Luther's history should be made a priority; sacred memories, which are attached to special places like Sunny Side, are what keep the past alive and teach us about our future.

Many, however, feel that the building committee could have spent more time listening to those who took the time and energy to vocalize their concerns and administration needs to remain sensitive to the wishes of the community.
