The tastiest trinket thrown from Mobile's Mardi Gras floats is the Moon Pie. Invented in 1917 by the Chattanooga Bakery in Chattanooga, Tennessee, this marshmallow-filled, chocolate-covered graham-cracker cookie became a parade staple when sharp-edged Cracker Jack boxes were banned in the1970s. Last year Mobilians snapped up nearly 7 million pies during Carnival, including look-alike Mardi Gras pies from the Mondo Bakery Co. in Rome, Georgia. Moon Pies suit the family-friendly ambience of Mobile's Mardi Gras: Kids may get bored by beads, but Moon Pies keep them happy. Us, too.
