Waterways News From Sydney

Waterways News From Sydney

Author: Neil Patchett
Sydney Harbour's reputation continues to soar, fueled by the success of events such as the recent New Year's Eve festivities. The world was watching as pyrotechnics burst from the Harbour Bridge and Opera House in what was the biggest nighttime aquatic event yet staged in Australia. Worldwide attention was focused on Sydney because it was one of the first major capital cities to usher in the New Year. Thankfully, with appropriate planning and preparation, the night was not only spectacular but also free of major accidents out on a busy waterway. The Waterways Authority of NSW coordinated the on-water traffic management and estimated that around 100,000 people in 5,000 boats turned out to watch the fireworks and aquatic show, which was acclaimed as one of the best New Year's Eve celebrations in the world. The Waterways Authority's event manager, Leslie Brix-Nielsen, said the team effort involving the Waterways, water police, coast guard and coastal patrol did a great job in managing the large spectator fleet at night. Although the night was a success in terms of the spectacle and on-water safety, Waterways would use lessons learned to fine-tune the management of upcoming aquatic events such as Australia Day and the Olympic Games. The Fast Response Vessel was launched in mid-December and was put to good use on New Year's Eve. Equipped as an on-water ambulance and with paramedics on board, it was used to attend to 14 people who either required on-the-spot treatment or were transferred to Medivac locations. None of the patients was in serious condition. The FRV, however, proved its worth for such major aquatic events. Meanwhile, the Waterways Authority has received approval to extend the Super Yacht Marina from its current 10 berths to a total of 27 berths including land-based infrastructure to support the marina. The general manager of business services, Paul Robinson, has indicated that the decision to build the additional 17 berths would depend on commitments from vessels to visit during the Olympic period. At this stage there are 12 vessels which are committed to berths for September / October 2000. Capt. Mike Ebsworth of the 46-meter super yacht Ilona said Rozelle Bay Super Yacht Marina is a great base for a super yacht cruising in the South Pacific. "Arriving at the facility (in early December) in Rozelle Bay was a pleasant surprise," he said. "We just tied up alongside and connected up to services such as shore power without a hitch. "There was also sufficient secure parking right next to the berth to allow 160 guests to arrive for a New Year's Eve function on board." Capt. Ebsworth, who worked as a charter vessel captain on Sydney Harbour 10 years ago, said he was also impressed with the transformation to Blackwattle and Rozelle bays. He said the area had been cleaned up and organized into a haven for visiting yachts with small vessels riding at anchor in the protected bays and super yachts secured to berths. Ilona will use Rozelle Bay as its base for the next 12 months. Other super yachts to use the first-stage berths over the festive season included Sally Ann (47 m) and Dreamtime (31 m).

Similar in style to the International Yacht Club d'Antibes, it can accommodate 27 stern-to-berths catering specifically to motor yachts in the 45- to 75-meter range. The facility will have 24 berths stern to a floating pontoon and the three large 75-meter berths stern to the hard dock. A chain ground-line system secures the yachts forward. Each berth has shore power (380/415 V, three-phase, 250 ~ 450 amps, 50 Hz), five telephone lines, an ISDN line, Foxtel Cable television input, fresh water and a vacuum-assisted sewage pumpout. The land site will be very much like a five-star hotel with reception, concierge, shops, cafe, currency changing, travel agency, bar, and function center, all linked by covered walkways and chauffeur-driven electric limousine golf buggies. The site is secure with 24-hour patrolled security and will be manned by 15 marina attendants. It is located in Rozelle Bay, which is about five minutes by car or tender to the CBD. The second stage, a further 17 berths, is currently under construction and will be completed in March. Paul Robinson and Super Yacht Project Team member Richard Morris recently visited Auckland, where discussions were held with a number of organizing bodies, government departments and skippers and owners of vessels. Some super-yacht skippers sought clarification of chartering regulations, which are as follows:

Pittwater is the next waterway north of Sydney Harbour and is a large area of calm water. It is much quieter than Sydney Harbour for sailing, fishing, swimming and water skiing. Scotland Island is accessible by water only (5 minutes trip from Church Point) visitors can use our small boats, or take the ferry or water taxi (24 hours). We also have a car on the mainland and a 28ft sailing boat that can be used. Pittwater opens up to the Hawkesbury River and a large area of waterways in the Kuringai National Park. It is very beautiful and quiet and perfect for sailing.

Gov. James E. McGreevey has taken another laudable step toward keeping the Garden State from sprouting more homes and businesses along waterways. Agency Brokerage Spark If a vessel advertises itself in Australia and operates for charter while in Australia, it will be subject to the current import duty requirements. However, if the vessel is for private use, a Cruising Permit is issued for private cruising for a 12-month period. Application for extension is possible. Also, the NSW Regional Director of Customs will approve entry under special Olympic concessions (i.e., without import duty) where vessels used for charter can demonstrate a connection with the Sydney 2000 Olympics. This concession applies to 31 December 2000; however, requests for extension can be made on an individual basis.
