New Jersey Should Double Gasoline Tax, Report Says

Business Brokerage Seeking a cash infusion for public transportation projects to benefit low-income residents, a liberal think tank released a report Wednesday that calls for doubling the state gasoline tax and hiking the cost of vehicle registrations for luxury cars.

"We are not doing that bad in New Jersey. In California they are already paying more than $2 per gallon, " Cielo said. John Pucher, a Rutgers University public policy professor for more than two decades, said New Jersey gasoline prices are "much too low." "We are one of the lowest states in the nation when it comes to gas prices, " Pucher said. Pucher suggested that instead of finding ways to lower the cost of gasoline, the governor and legislators in Trenton should increase the tax on gas. Currently, New Jersey residents pay a total of 33 cents per gallon in state and federal taxes. Increasing the tax on gas would augment the state government's budget to fix and build new roads, resulting in less traffic congestion.

Forex Broker While raising any tax is a tough sell politically, the concept of increasing the gasoline tax has recently gained the support of several labor unions, environmentalists and former state Sen. John Lynch, a key adviser to Gov. James E. McGreevey. A similar attempt by former Gov. Christie Whitman to supplement transportation spending through a gas tax hike failed after a political scuffle in 1998.

(AXcess News) The New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) ever "NJTC State of the Technology Economy Report" that compares New Jersey's performance to both the general business environment and technology industries in Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Virginia. The findings of the report were unveiled today in a presentation to business, government and education leaders at the New Jersey Network studios in Trenton.

Online Brokerage "It would be a good first step, and it's needed," Lynch, a Democratic power broker, was quoted as saying last month. " It's something that could be digested pretty easily."

Stations buy their gas from retailers, who make about 8 cents a gallon in New Jersey. Sometimes, when buying gasoline becomes more expensive, retailers also can see their profits drop, said Bill Dressler, executive director of the New Jersey Gasoline Retailers Association in Springfield.

Real Estate Broker But Republicans, while acknowledging the state's current budget crisis and a need for better public transportation, didn't see the gas tax as the answer.

In New Jersey, property taxes raise about $14 billion each year, with half earmarked for schools and half for county and municipal government. New Jersey property taxes are among the highest in the nation, and the system has been criticized as unfair to the elderly and people on fixed incomes. Under New Jersey law, Adler's bill would have to be approved by the Senate and Assembly and signed by the governor by Aug. 27 for there to be a referendum on the November ballot asking if there should be a constitutional convention in April 2003.

Agency Brokerage Spark "I really don't know where they're going to get any support for that," said Monmouth County Sen. Joseph Palaia, who represents Jersey Shore communities dependent on income from summer travelers. Gas prices are already too high, with recent increases of as much as 8 cents a gallon, he explained.

Gov. James E. McGreevey yesterday rejected a plan to increase New Jersey's gasoline tax by up to 15 cents a gallon, saying the move could stall the state's halting economic revival. "In this period of economic uncertainty, with New Jersey just beginning to emerge from a downturn, with small businesses struggling to create new jobs, with families struggling to pay bills, it's the wrong time to increase the gas tax and I will not support it, " McGreevey told state business leaders at the New Jersey Business & Industry Association's annual Public Policy Forum.

Business Broker "Both sides are going to be floating out ideas about how to solve our problems, and we do have problems," Palaia said. "But raising the gas tax is certainly not the way to go at all."

Brokerage Account Wednesday's report by New Jersey Policy Perspective, written by senior policy analyst Mary Forsberg, called for adding a 10-cent state tariff to the 10.5 cents and 13.5 cents the state now collects on gasoline and diesel fuel, respectively.

Stock Broker It also advocated a plan to assess vehicle registration fees based on value - costing luxury-car drivers perhaps hundreds of dollars more - instead of the current formula that considers a car's age and use.

Brokerage Online Stock Trading "Cars in New Jersey today are getting the closest thing possible to a free ride and the rest of us are losing revenue," said Policy Perspective's Jon Shure.

Broker Justin Ticket Garden State drivers have not faced a state gas tax increase in 14 years and the cost of fuel and vehicle registration here lags behind most states in the nation, Shure said.

Real Estate Brokerage "If gas in New Jersey went up by 10 cents a gallon, it would still cost less than it does in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut," he added.

Commodity Broker While income from the existing tax is dedicated by law to supporting the Transportation Trust Fund, a massive pool of state money created in 1984 to pay for road and bridge projects, the Policy Perspective report recommends using the additional tax money to provide low-income residents better transit options.

Brokerage House Without providing specifics, Shure suggested the money could buy new train cars for NJ Transit, pay for a study to remap bus routes to better link urban cores with suburban jobs or provide $50 annual tax credits to help poor drivers offset the increased gas costs.

Real Estate Broker Exam Officials from McGreevey's office and a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation declined to comment on the proposal.

Brokerage Services But Palaia and others said without dedicating the funds to transportation projects, any increase in tax revenue could easily be lost to the state's general revenue fund and then spent on other projects.
