Restored Rail Service Upsets Neighbors
Business Brokerage There was the letter promising them the trains weren't coming. There were the assurances that they would have the final say. So when the Union County Board of Freeholders announced 10 days ago that the old Staten Island Railway and the Rahway Valley Line would be restored to service, officials in the communities along the rail lines felt they were misled.
The route through Matawan would be a shorter ride and could be electrified since all the rails are gone. It would also pass by an area with more commuters than Englishtown. The people of Marlboro have been writing for months, complaining about the old rail line becoming a hiking trail. If that upsets them so much, renew the old 35. mile abandoned freight line between Lakehurst and Matawan for the new commuter rail. I would gladly take a hiking trail.
Forex Broker The Staten Island Railway runs from Cranford, through Roselle to Linden, and then across the Arthur Kill, north of the Goethals Bridge, to Staten Island. The Rahway Valley Line runs from Cranford, through Roselle Park, Kenilworth, Union and Springfield, before connecting in Summit to NJ Transit's Morristown line.

Greater service area means easier, faster and more complete mixing.
Online Brokerage Both lines, which never carried huge volumes of freight to begin with, had been inactive for more than a decade. They were dormant for so long that a number of homeowners along the nearly 12 miles of track thought they would never see those trains again and incorporated the rail path into their back yards.
I find it upsetting that the Press would so obviously be pushing for a rail line that doesn't make sense. The headline "Go west, say backers of new rail line to N.Y." Middlesex line. Gee, all of 20 people. 30 p.m., Matawan route.
Real Estate Broker But late last summer, utilizing money from the state transportation bond act, the freeholders approved a contract with the Morristown and Erie Railway to repair the two rail routes and restore freight service. When crews started clearing the long overgrown right of way in Roselle, opposition to the project started to grow from towns along the line.

Agency Brokerage Spark Last October, freeholder Nicholas Scutari sent a letter to residents that read, in part: "Here are the facts: The clearing of these lines is strictly for health and public safety reasons, not for reactivation. There is no intention of starting any rail service along these lines in your community."

Business Broker "We were given assurances that we'd be given an opportunity to say 'Yes,' or say 'No,'" said Roselle Park Mayor Joseph DeIorio.
Brokerage Account "This was a clear setup to sneak this in ... hiding the issue until after the (primary) election," DeIorio said. "(We) requested meetings with the county manager and the freeholders and we were just brushed aside."
Stock Broker Springfield Mayor Greg Clark said he was shocked by the freeholders' "lack of candor."
Brokerage Online Stock Trading "We were told if you didn't want it, it would not come through," said Clark, who maintains that Springfield and surrounding towns would gain nothing from the freight service.
Broker Justin Ticket "They shut all of us out," said Kenilworth Mayor Michael Tripodi. "There was no one talking to us from the county since last fall."
Real Estate Brokerage Now that the county is openly committed to restoring rail service, the towns are kicking in $10,000 each to hire legal counsel in Washington, D.C., to mount a possible court challenge to the rail project.
Commodity Broker But it is a challenge that is not likely to succeed, said county manager George Devanney.
Brokerage House Devanney said the county withheld making any comments on the matter since the fall because it was under review by county legal advisors. Their conclusion, he said, was that the county did not have the authority to block the revitalization of the freight lines.
Real Estate Broker Exam "We're trying to make the best of it for the county," Devanney said. While the county cannot pass any laws restricting rail operations, it is trying to reach a similar end through its contract negotiations with the Morristown and Erie, by getting the short-line freight company to agree to the length and frequency of the trains that would run on the route, he said.
Brokerage Services "Having control over this line is better than having no say over what's transported over this line," Devanney said. "CSX and Norfolk-Southern had a strong interest in this line and their intention was not to service Union County. They wanted to use it as a through service to connect westward.
Broker Live Ticket "What the freeholders did was in the best interests of protecting county residents from heavy freight traffic traveling through these towns," he said.
Online Brokerage Firm Not so, Tripodi countered. If the freeholders were acting in the best interests of residents, he said, the board would not have signed any contract at all.
Security Broker Dealer "The entire matter was handled haphazardly from the beginning. One mistake led to another," he said.
Coldwell Banker Residential In the end, however, there may not be sufficient funding to complete the entire rail project. While the Cranford to Linden link will be done, Devanney said the $7.5 million that the county received from the state "will not take us past Union."
Freight Broker "Springfield and Summit won't see any rehabilitation of the track. There's no money to do it, nor intent to seek any money," he said.
